STATE Labor MP Paul Gibson was king-hit, thrown against a car and bashed in the carpark of a suburban McDonald’s.

The Blacktown MP claimed his American assailant repeatedly told him, “This is how we do it in America” during Sunday’s attack outside the fast-food restaurant in Thornleigh, in Sydney’s north.

Mr Gibson, who reported the incident to police, said he was lucky to survive the attack, which knocked him out.

“How he didn’t kill me I don’t know,” he said.

Mr Gibson said he and a female companion were parking after a function when he gave the man sitting in the next car a “friendly toot”.

The man then got out and guided Mr Gibson in.

The MP said the man then accused Mr Gibson of running over his foot, before king-hitting him.

The man then grabbed Mr Gibson by the throat, threw him into the bonnet of a 4WD and smashed his head on the cement.

As his head was being pounded into the cement, Mr Gibson said he heard the man repeatedly say: “This is how we do it in America, this is how we do it in America.”.

When people came to drag off the attacker, Mr Gibson said he said: “This is how we do it in Australia” and hit the man back, causing him to bleed.

The pair were separated and Mr Gibson claimed he was told by a bystander that the man had a revolver. Mr Gibson and his companion, who he said was a “friend” and would not name, then drove to Gosford and made a report at the police station there.

“I got out and he said ‘you ran over my foot’,” Mr Gibson said yesterday.

“I said: ‘Mate, if I ran over your foot, I’m sorry, are you OK?’

“I went to walk into McDonalds – the next thing I know I’m in la la land. I didn’t know if I’d had a heart attack or what.

“Next thing I knew I’m flying through the air. Everyone tells me this bloke’s come up, punched me in the back of the head, grabbed me by the throat.

“I could hear him say: ‘This is how we do it in America, this is how we do it in America’. How he didn’t kill me I don’t know.”

Mr Gibson said he was close to losing consciousness during the attack and has since had X-rays to identify whether he had a broken shoulder and ribs.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday Hornsby police were appealing for information to identify the attacker.

Ku-ring-gai detectives were investigating and the man police wanted to speak to was “of African American appearance, 185-187cm tall, an acne-scarred complexion and with a solid build”.

“His hair was styled into a crew cut and he spoke with an American accent.”

  1. What is “King-Hit”? Never have seen the term. Is this Aussie slang?

  2. @Davy – yes, it's Aussie slang (sorry). It's when you're hit from behind, over your shoulder into your face/side of your head – i.e. you don't see it coming and it usually either kills you or does serious damage.

  3. More urban terrorism Downunder. Lurnea is in diverse South-West Sydney.

    Hero killed saving family

CONFRONTED by four home invaders armed with machetes, knives and an axe, Kesley Burgess locked his girlfriend and mother in a bedroom, told them he loved them and turned to try to fight off the attackers. He had no chance.

The 25-year-old security guard was mercilessly struck down and repeatedly cut and stabbed.

He died of horrific injuries in hospital on Friday night following the apparently random attack at the family home in Clingan Ave, Lurnea, late on Thursday…

“Kesley died for a handbag,” Terrence said.

“There was nothing there to take. They stole her pension money.”

Police said the attackers were not known to the family. They said they were searching for four men of Islander appearance but the family described two of the invaders as being of Lebanese descent, another as Caucasian and the fourth of African appearance.
